ABOUT
For the past 15 years, I have worked in high school mathematics education in one form or another - first as a teacher, then as an instructional coach, and finally as a program coordinator. One thing that has remained constant during that time is that my efforts were oriented towards the goal of making high school mathematics education joyful, meaningful, and equitable.
Working alongside so many students, teachers, parents, schools, and districts has taught me a lot about the conditions that are conducive (or not) to accomplishing this goal. High quality curriculum is at the top of that list of conditions and can help to facilitate important changes to systems and structures in schools (in addition to supporting student learning).
Math that Matters is a curriculum designed, from the beginning, to support teachers, schools, and districts that want to make any (or all) of the following changes:
-
help students see how mathematics is connected to important issues in society
-
teach in ways that give students opportunities to engage in mathematical practices of investigating, conjecturing, justifying, proving, generalizing, and communicating.
-
organize their program around a competency-based grading structure
-
eliminate tracking in their mathematics program
-
and others
The materials are free. This allows schools to use their budgets to support teachers with their ongoing needs as they learn to use the curriculum to meet ambitious changes to their math program.
Get in touch to tell me about your experiences, provide feedback on the curriculum, schedule professional support for implementation, any other consulting needs you might have, or just to say 'hi.' I hope the materials I've provided can help bring joy and purpose to you and your students.
