How much do you need to make each year in order to meet the basic costs of living? What portion of the American people make at least this much? Are answers to these questions the same in other countries across the world? In this unit, you will use real to data about the incomes of people across the world to investigate these questions (and many more)!

SECTION 1

What is the income distribution in the U.S.? How do incomes of different genders compare? How do incomes of people in different regions compare? And, most importantly, what would the income distribution look like in a fair and healthy community? As you look at different single variable data sets, you will consider:

  • How can we visualize this data?

  • How can we describe what is typical in this data set?

  • How can we describe how much the overall data set varies from what is typical?

SECTION 2

Does income inequality matter? To investigate this question, you will use a variety of real two variable data sets from countries around the world. You will look at the impact (or not) of income inequality on safety, life expectancy, corruption, poverty, and other important social conditions. As you do this, you will consider:

  • How can we visualize these relationships?

  • How can we describe what is typical of this relationship?

  • How can we describe how much the overall data varies from what is typical?
